Already on opposite sides of your legs, your youngest dog edged farther away from your oldest cat. (Oh dear said your youngest cat.)(I heard some squeaking said your younger dog.)(Do fa re said your youngest cat re fa do.)(What said your youngest dog.)(Just repeat after me said your youngest cat listen to the purple finch I think that’s whose singing now up and down and up then reverse.) Side-lying next to you your younger dog covered floppy black ear with dainty white paw. (Not the words the pitch said your youngest cat.)(Well but I thought I was doing that said your youngest dog so softly you thought maybe nobody else heard a word.)(You rubbed her buttery head and said it’s almost time for toast.) Early: east, orange azalea/bachelor’s button petals; west, thyme blossoms/forget me not. You hung feeders, brought water, steeped tea, worked. You shed jacket, pulled on brimmed hat, kicked the ball. White bearded irises continued to push out pale blue buds. Morning glories unclasped slender hands, honeywort clapped. Standing beside maple trunk you looked up to find no blue. Hummingbirds absent but: woodpeckers (red-bellied, hairy, downy, pileated (singing, unseen); catbirds; brown-headed cowbirds; goldfinches; house finches; purple finches; red-winged blackbirds; chipping sparrows; field sparrows; osprey (high); mourning doves; red squirrels; gray squirrels; chipmunks; younger dog contorted, let go, too loud, reprimanded (rodent overload). Moon brings for three dogs open blossoms of azalea, a little redolent of skunk.
